Toyota has revealed what it calls the "most Australian Hilux ever developed," set to hit Australian showrooms in just a few weeks. While the US-market Tacoma switched to the GA-F platform in 2022, the ninth-generation Hilux continues with the IMV platform used by its predecessor.
The 2.8-litre ‘1GD’ turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine returns, delivering 150kW and 500Nm of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. Manual versions have a torque limit of 420Nm. Dual-cab SR5 grades and above will come equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that boosts the drivetrain by 8.5kW and 65Nm at low speeds, similar to the current model.
"A fully electric version has been confirmed for 2026, with a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) model expected to follow in 2028."
Currently, no hybrid or plug-in hybrid models are planned, but these options have not been excluded.
The core cabin remains mostly unchanged, emphasizing features and qualities that Toyota believes buyers prioritize in Australia.
Author's summary: The 2026 Toyota Hilux retains proven mechanics while embracing mild-hybrid tech and future electric models, tailored to Australian preferences and offering versatile options for drivers.
