Raymond Biesinger, artist and illustrator, wrote 9 Times My Work Has Been Ripped Off: An Informal Self-Defence Guide for Independent Creatives to support fellow creators who face unauthorized use of their work.
“Spite, quite honestly,” he laughs, explaining why he wrote the book.
“My goal with the book is to open up the window of possibilities for what people think they can do [to protect their work and their rights].”
Biesinger's artwork has been published in renowned outlets such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Monocle. Residing in Quebec with his family, he was inspired to write the book after a dispute with an organization that used one of his images without permission or payment.
He shares, “After 20 years in the business, I have a whole lot of these stories.” What began as a single account evolved into a blend of career reflections, a subtle memoir, and practical business advice.
The book serves as a guide for independent creatives looking to defend their work and understand their rights better.
This book offers valuable insights and practical advice for artists navigating unauthorized use of their creations, empowering them to protect their rights confidently.
