Environment Canada reported on Saturday that weather warnings initially issued for strong winds on North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii have now broadened to include heavy rainfall alerts for the North Coast regions.
The wind warnings issued late Friday continue, with southeasterly gusts ranging from 70 to 90 km/h, reaching up to 110 km/h on exposed coastal areas.
“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” states Environment Canada.
These gusts began Saturday morning and are expected to subside by Sunday. Power outages, service interruptions, and travel challenges remain possible during this windstorm.
DriveBC urged drivers in North Coast areas to exercise extra caution on the roads over the next few days.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” warns Environment Canada.
Alongside the wind warnings, rainfall warnings are in effect for Haida Gwaii and North Coast communities including Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace. Total precipitation is forecasted to reach 50 to 85 millimetres from Saturday through late Sunday.
The North Coast of British Columbia faces a combination of strong winds and heavy rain this weekend, prompting multiple warnings and safety precautions from authorities.
