Queensland's Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers was discovered dead at his Brisbane residence on Tuesday morning. Authorities confirmed they are investigating his sudden passing but do not consider it suspicious.
Leavers, aged 57, had a distinguished career in the Queensland Police Service, which he joined in 1989. He served in several divisions, including the criminal investigation and child protection units.
From 2009 to 2024, he led the Queensland Police Union as its general president and CEO, before later representing the Police Federation of Australia. In August 2024, he took on the role of Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner, focusing on improving cooperation between border communities, local governments, and business sectors.
“Dedicated, principled, and driven to make a difference for this state,”
— Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described Ian Leavers following the news of his death.
Leavers was last publicly seen attending the Coroners Court during the inquest into the Wieambilla shooting in August 2024.
Ian Leavers, lifelong Queensland police leader and Cross-Border Commissioner, died suddenly at home, leaving behind a respected legacy of public service and community commitment.
