In an extensive interview, former U.S. Secretary of State and current Executive Chairman of Impact, Mike Pompeo, discussed the significance of Western unity, the shifting geopolitical dynamics in Ukraine and the Middle East, the growing challenge from China, and the strategic role of Cyprus in a changing global order.
During his visit to Nicosia for the annual Economist Conference, Pompeo emphasized that smaller nations like Cyprus need to navigate carefully between competing powers, align with reliable partners, and strengthen both their security and economic resilience.
“Small countries like Cyprus must carefully navigate between competing powers, align with trusted partners, and strengthen their security and economic resilience,” said Pompeo.
His statements highlight Washington’s increasing focus on the Eastern Mediterranean, notably in energy, defense, and regional cooperation. The region’s growing role in the transatlantic agenda makes Cyprus a significant contributor to Western stability and deterrence.
“President Trump is working hard to restore the deterrence that was lost under Joe Biden, just as we did after the failed foreign policy of the Obama years,” Pompeo noted.
He added that there is substantial continuity between the first and second Trump administrations in foreign policy goals. According to Pompeo, the major developments currently unfolding in the Middle East reflect the same strategic approach that guided earlier U.S. actions, including the pressure campaign against Iran and the removal of Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani, which weakened Tehran’s regional influence.
Pompeo portrayed the West as standing at a critical juncture, where maintaining strategic partnerships and deterrence is vital for global security. He reiterated that consistent U.S. leadership, particularly under President Trump, remains essential to keeping adversaries in check and encouraging democratic allies to act decisively.
Pompeo underscores that Cyprus and other small nations must strengthen alliances with the West and maintain resilience amid geopolitical competition and regional instability.
