The reliable Toyota Hilux pickup truck, famed worldwide for enduring tough conditions and occasionally carrying heavy automatic weapons, has entered the electric era. The ninth-generation Hilux was unveiled today in Thailand, a decade after its predecessor, with Toyota emphasizing the electric variant alongside upcoming diesel and hydrogen fuel cell models.
The new Hilux comes in both single- and double-cab styles. However, only the double-cab will be sold in European markets due to sales strategy considerations from Toyota.
The electric version features a dual-motor configuration, one on each axle, powered by a 59.2 kWh battery. It delivers 193 horsepower (144 kW) in total, with the front motor producing 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque and the rear motor 198 lb-ft (269 Nm).
Toyota states, "The new Hilux BEV will be able to go roughly 150 miles (240 kilometers) on a full charge, based on the WLTP cycle."
Along with the electric version, Toyota will also introduce a hydrogen fuel cell Hilux, advancing its “multi-pathway approach” to sustainable vehicles.
Author's summary: The new Toyota Hilux embraces electric and hydrogen powertrains, balancing rugged utility with evolving eco-friendly technology while maintaining strong payload and towing capabilities.
