Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, visited Sri Lanka from 3 to 8 November to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with the Holy See. The visit aimed to reinforce the mutual commitment to peace and collaboration between the two states.
During his stay, Archbishop Gallagher also visited sites impacted by the tragic Easter Sunday attacks in 2019.
Upon arrival on Monday, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry announced that the archbishop was welcomed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra. On the same day, Archbishop Gallagher met with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
On 4 November, his schedule included meetings with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath. Additionally, the Archbishop took part in a conference focused on the Holy See’s commitment to dialogue and peace.
This event commemorated five decades of diplomatic relations established on 6 September 1975. The conference highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue to foster peace and cooperation between the two nations.
