Alex Newhook scored 1:40 into overtime to secure a 4-3 victory for the Montreal Canadiens against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
The Canadiens forced overtime thanks to rookie Ivan Demidov, who tied the game at 17:37 of the third period. Cole Caufield added his 10th goal of the season, and Juraj Slafkovsky scored his third goal in as many games, helping Montreal (9-3-0) extend their winning streak to three games.
For Ottawa (6-5-2), Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle each scored, continuing their personal five-game point streaks. Michael Amadio also found the net. Linus Ullmark stopped 23 shots in the losing effort.
Late in the second period, Montreal's Lane Hutson was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Tim Stutzle during a breakaway, but Ullmark denied the attempt.
The Canadiens had a golden opportunity to extend their lead, but Hutson's penalty shot was stopped by Ullmark.
Ottawa capitalized shortly after with Amadio scoring in the final 11 seconds of the period. Initially disallowed due to goaltender interference, the goal was reinstated after a successful Senators’ challenge.
