Karrueche Tran is expanding her career by stepping into the music world as a rapper. Known as an Emmy Award-winning actress, beauty entrepreneur, and fashion icon, she now stars as a platinum-selling rapper in Lifetime’s new film Terry McMillan Presents: Preach, Pray, Love, premiering on Saturday, November 8.
The movie follows Charlisa “Charlie” Jones, a flashy platinum-selling rapper portrayed by Tran. Charlie's bold persona and provocative lyrics have attracted more controversy than praise. After serving time in prison, she is sentenced to community service under the guidance of Pastor Kyrus Owens, played by Mark J.P. Hood. The pastor is a charismatic leader working to raise funds for a new church building.
Though their lives seem worlds apart, Charlie and Pastor Owens develop a strong connection. As their relationship grows, the pastor's congregation questions his dedication to the church, while Charlie faces the challenge of balancing her edgy public image with her wish for redemption. The story explores themes of faith, forgiveness, and fame, marking Karrueche's most musically ambitious role to date.
“I’m not musically inclined in any way,” Tran said with a laugh during the Raising Cane’s Giant Pumpkin Unveiling Event in Hollywood. “But it was a great challenge. I studied a rapper named Lola Brooke, I prepared myself, and I did it.”
Karrueche Tran successfully channels her inner rapper in a compelling film role, balancing complex themes of faith and fame while pushing her artistic boundaries.
