Brisbane striker Justin Vidic insists he does not have anything to prove to his former club Newcastle, but is determined to demonstrate his "quality" after being released by the Jets last season.
After scoring just one goal in 13 A-League games during two years with Newcastle—12 of those matches as a substitute—Vidic was not offered a new contract when Mark Milligan replaced Robbie Stanton as coach. With his career at risk, the 21-year-old seized the opportunity to trial with Brisbane Roar. His performance earned him a two-year contract where his hardworking, traditional style fits well with coach Michael Valkanis's straightforward and physical tactics.
“These things happen for a reason. I’m sure I’ll show my quality. I don’t think I have anything to prove to them. They know what I’m capable of, and there are lots of people at the club that I still speak to and that I’m still close to. They know my potential and I want to show them that on Sunday.”
Vidic has started two of Brisbane’s three matches this season and scored his first goal for the Roar during their 2-1 loss to Wellington last month. He considers starting in recent games a positive step for himself.
“Starting in our past two games has been good for me.”
The upcoming match between Brisbane Roar and Newcastle Jets at Sunshine Coast Stadium will be an opportunity for Vidic to confirm his abilities on the field.
