Film: Girlbands Forever Final Part

Written and directed by Ciaran Creagh, this film is set in Boyle, County Roscommon, and follows a day in the life of a 15-year-old girl in a small Irish town. Although fictional, it draws closely from the tragic life and death of Ann Lovett, who passed away on January 31, 1984, shortly after giving birth to her stillborn son near a church in Granard, County Longford. Zara Devlin stars in the lead role.

Girlbands Forever, BBC Two, 9.00pm

The final episode of this series explores the journey of talent show winners Little Mix, their struggles with social media pressure, and changes in the Sugababes lineup, including appearances by familiar members. The evening continues with a strong focus on girl power.

T2 Trainspotting, Channel 4, 11.30pm

Twenty years after the original British film, director Danny Boyle reunites the cast for this 2017 sequel. Though it received mixed reviews, it remains an entertaining watch.

"This film is fiction but closely based on the life and death of Ann Lovett, who died on the 31st of January 1984; some hours after giving birth to her stillborn son in an area close to a church in her home town of Granard in County Longford."

Author's summary: Saturday's TV features a poignant Irish drama inspired by a true story, a celebration of girl groups under social media pressure, and a much-anticipated Trainspotting sequel reunion.
