After a long offseason filled with uncertainty, Russell Westbrook began his 18th NBA season with the Sacramento Kings. Despite having a player option to stay with the Denver Nuggets for the 2025–26 season, Westbrook revealed that leaving Denver was not his decision.
Westbrook had signed a one-year deal with a player option in the summer of 2024, which would have allowed him to remain with the Nuggets.
However, upon returning to Denver to play against his former team, he disclosed the real reason he declined the option.
“The truth is that they didn’t want me back,” Westbrook told The Denver Post. “Somebody else do.”
Westbrook experienced a form of career resurgence as a backup for Denver, averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.
Despite these solid numbers, Denver chose to take a different direction moving forward.
“I thought it was great,” Westbrook commented about his season in Denver. “I guess other people didn’t.”
When reflecting on his tenure, Westbrook maintained a positive outlook:
“Every part of this journey for me is always a positive impact.”
Russell Westbrook left Denver because the team decided not to keep him, despite his strong performance and player option, and he chooses to view the experience positively.
