Medník House by Päivä Architekti
The Czech studio Päivä Architekti expanded a century-old hillside home on a rocky slope above the Sázava River in the Czech Republic. The new addition transforms the site with a steel and timber studio filled with natural light.
Site and Design Integration
The extension sits where the forest meets the garden, shaped by the wedge-like terrain and bordered by mature trees. From the garden, the renovated house aligns with long views toward the valley and Medník Hill's summit, preserving the openness that defines the site’s character.
Architectural Features
- The addition is a freestanding studio connected to the original home by a covered terrace.
- The terrace encloses an existing oak tree, keeping it as a vital anchor in the design.
- A covered walkway leads towards the garden, softening the boundary between interior and exterior, extending the flow of daily life outdoors.
Interior Layout
The studio features an open, double-height space illuminated by sliding glass walls overlooking the valley. Within this volume, a compact gallery space is suspended above the work area, offering a quiet retreat.
