Rowan Dean mourns the passing of Graham "Richo" Richardson, a prominent Labor power broker and commentator on Sky News Australia, who died aged 76.
Known affectionately as Richo by both friends and opponents, he was a towering figure in Labor politics and later became a sharp, engaging, and insightful commentator on Sky News Australia.
Richo played crucial roles in the most successful Labor government in Australian history, with insights and knowledge considered unmatched.
Rowan Dean recalls the privilege of calling Graham a friend and enjoying lively debates with him on television, as well as entertaining lunches around Sydney.
"For several years, Richo and I would spar with each other on Paul Murray Live, where we would go hammer and tongs over whatever was the left-right issue of the day."
Despite intense political battles, people were often surprised to see them laughing and sharing beers, proving their rivalry was all in good spirit.
Richo's popularity and success stemmed from his straightforward, sometimes ruthless style. In his own words, he could be “a right bastard.” Such was the nature of national politics.
"Yes, he could be ruthless, yes he could be forthright, yes he could be, in his own words, ‘a right bastard.’"
His personality and approach reflected the intensity and demands of political life.
Graham Richardson was a formidable political figure whose sharp intellect, fierce passion, and distinctive personality left a lasting mark on Australian politics and media.
