ESSAY: Zohran's smile

Zohran's Smile

The significance of a facial expression can reveal much about a person and even a city. I start with an admission: several times—precisely three—I’ve finished watching a video of Zohran Mamdani speak and then caught myself practicing my smile in the mirror.

I have no political ambitions, yet Mamdani’s grin feels magnetic—disarming his critics, standing apart from his allies, and illuminating the often-gray atmosphere of New York politics. It made me wonder if my grandmother was right when she said I look too stern in my photos. Could my life have taken a different shape if I had such an effortless brightness in my expression?

“A smile so wide actually hurts.”

That’s what I found after trying to mimic his look. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to hurt Mamdani. Before dismissing that thought, consider this: his campaign was built not on charm but on ideas. Many New Yorkers could list them easily—fast and free public transit, universal childcare, and a wide-reaching rent freeze.

His opponents, meanwhile, offered little more than warnings steeped in fear rather than counterproposals built on substance.

Author’s Summary

A reflection on how Zohran Mamdani’s genuine smile reveals the deeper charisma behind his policy-driven campaign and challenges the emotional tone of modern New York politics.
