TRT World - EU: Sudan's Al Fasher a 'graveyard of humanity' as aid remains barred

EU Highlights Dire Humanitarian Situation in Sudan's Al Fasher

At the European Commission's midday briefing on Friday, spokesperson Eva Hrncirova declared Sudan to be experiencing "one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world." Civilians are trapped under siege as hospitals are targeted, aid routes blocked, and people subjected to violence.

Al Fasher Described as a 'Graveyard of Humanity'

Hrncirova emphasized that the city of Al Fasher is no longer reachable for humanitarian workers.

«Al Fasher is not accessible for humanitarian workers, if you ask about it. I can even say that Al Fasher has become a graveyard of humanity.»

Condemnation of Atrocities and Appeal for Peace

She condemned the ongoing atrocities in Sudan unequivocally, stating starvation and mass killings cannot be used as weapons of war, as this is a violation of international humanitarian law. The spokesperson urged all conflicting parties to resume negotiations and urgently achieve a lasting ceasefire.

The EU has expressed readiness to support both negotiation efforts and the enforcement of any resultant agreements. Hrncirova also called for "immediate, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access" to all conflict-affected regions.

Recent Developments in Al Fasher

On October 26, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of Al Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, reportedly committing massacres against civilians. This escalation raises fears of further geographical division of Sudan.

«The assault could entrench the geographical partition of Sudan.»

Summary: The EU urgently calls for safe humanitarian access and a permanent ceasefire in Sudan, highlighting Al Fasher's severe crisis and ongoing violence against civilians.
