An Alabama legislator has prefiled a bill aiming to limit the communication methods of individuals convicted of sexual offenses against children and to mandate treatment programs.
"It gives them another tool in the toolbox. It is a pretty disgusting crime."
"It is just another level of accountability. The polygraph people came to me with that. We are seeing other states putting that in because, apparently, people are lying to you."
Butler introduced a similar bill in the 2025 legislative session that passed the House but did not receive a Senate vote. While experts and defense attorneys support the treatment requirements, they expressed skepticism about some other elements of the legislation.
This bill strengthens restrictions and accountability for child sex offenders by limiting their communication access and mandating treatment and polygraph exams.
