Andrew McMullen, a 42-year-old resident of 27 Ffordd Alban, Tywyn, was ordered to pay more than £4,000 in overdue child support or risk imprisonment. He appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on 30 October regarding a complaint for non-payment totaling £4,474.78.
The court described McMullen's failure to pay as a “wilful refusal” and determined that “no other method of enforcement is appropriate.” Magistrates noted that he showed “culpable neglect” and “chose to bury his head in the sand.”

McMullen was given a choice to pay the full amount or serve 42 days in jail. The sentence was suspended for two years on the condition that he makes monthly payments of £200.
