For artist and musician Jim McKnight, clear eyesight is vital. Cataracts made it harder for him to paint fine details, read fiddle music, and drive at night. “My colours were affected by the yellow haze cataracts give you, and the glare from headlights at night made it difficult to drive,” Jim explained. “My wife and I had to change our lifestyle, making sure we got home before dark.”
Jim’s optometrist referred him to ophthalmologist Dr. Brennan Eadie at the Eadie Eye Centre. He underwent cataract surgery on both eyes, spaced one month apart. The surgeries were performed at the Halifax Vision Surgical Centre.
Since 2020, Nova Scotia Health has partnered with Halifax Vision Surgical Centre to provide publicly funded cataract surgeries, allowing hospital operating rooms to focus on more complex eye procedures.
These initiatives contributed to Nova Scotia’s strong performance in the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report on wait times for priority procedures.
