As the government shutdown leads to a temporary suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, many organizations are stepping forward to help families in need. The suspension impacts approximately 42 million Americans who depend on this assistance each month to afford food.
On Monday, President Donald Trump’s administration confirmed it will partially fund SNAP for November. This decision followed rulings from two judges requiring the continuation of the nation’s largest food aid program.
Local food pantries across the country are working to bridge the gap created by the benefit interruption. United Way of Central Nebraska is among those leading efforts to provide immediate relief.
“We understand that many families rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table,” said the Executive Director of United Way of Central Nebraska. “We want everyone to know that help is available.”
United Way of South Central Nebraska has compiled a list of food resources for those seeking assistance, available in an online spreadsheet. Several other local food programs have also intensified their efforts to support communities during this period of uncertainty.
Community members interested in helping can visit the websites of these nonprofit organizations and click the “Donate Now” option to contribute.
