Maine Principal Regrets Halloween ICE Costume

Blue Middle School Principal James Black from Farmington, a small town in western Maine with fewer than 10,000 residents, expressed regret after photos of him dressed as an ICE agent for Halloween spread on social media, causing discomfort in the community.

In a letter sent to the superintendent, school board members, and community members, Black explained that his intention had never been to offend or target anyone. The letter accompanied a statement from Superintendent Christian M. Elkington, who acknowledged it had been a challenging week for the Mt. Blue Regional School District community.

“The costume was chosen in a lighthearted spirit, without consideration for the broader implications it might have, and I recognize now how it could have been perceived differently by others,”

Black emphasized that he has always aimed to demonstrate integrity, inclusion, and respect throughout his teaching career.

“I fully support all students and families universally, regardless of background, race, nationality, or personal circumstance.”
