Simu Liu admits he’s uncertain about the final cut of Avengers: Doomsday, even though he has some idea of what’s coming.
“Am I entirely sure that that's the version that's going to end up on the screen when the movie comes out next year? Not a whole lot.”
The role in In Your Dreams seems tailor-made for Liu. Beyond acting, he’s known for his creativity and talent in writing and performing. His 2022 memoir, We Were Dreamers, explored the world of imagination and ambition, aligning perfectly with the film’s themes.
Liu’s musical side has been well-documented. During an interview for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with The Hollywood Reporter, he showcased his singing ability by performing excerpts from several songs a cappella.
In Alex Woo’s animated feature debut, Liu voices Michael Ting, a once-promising solo musician still holding on to the remnants of his past fame. His character once shared the spotlight with his former bandmate and now wife, Jennifer, played by Cristin Milioti.
Their indie folk band, The Hypsonics, achieved gold status twelve years earlier. However, as their career approached success, Jennifer’s unexpected pregnancy changed everything. Now parents to twelve-year-old Stevie (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and younger son Elliot (Elias Janssen), the couple faces new challenges as Jennifer considers moving for a teaching job, sparking conflict with Michael.
As tension grows within the family, Stevie and Elliot embark on a magical journey within their dreams to meet the Sandman, voiced by Omid Djalili. Their goal is simple yet heartfelt — to mend their family before it falls apart.
Simu Liu blends emotional depth and artistic charm in In Your Dreams, while hinting at the mystery still surrounding Avengers: Doomsday.
