Despite The Marvels underperforming at the box office, Brie Larson is reportedly returning as Captain Marvel in Avengers: Doomsday. Earlier reports claimed she would not reprise her role in the MCU, but recent social media activity has sparked new speculation.
In her recent Instagram story (@brielarson), Larson was seen voting wearing a wing resembling Carol Danvers' from the films.
This has led fans to believe that last-minute modifications to Avengers: Doomsday could include Larson’s comeback as her superhero character.
While Larson is welcomed back despite the disappointing box office of The Marvels, the Eternals remain absent from upcoming MCU plans. The film earned around $400 million globally on a $200 million budget, which, before marketing expenses, labeled it a financial failure.
Critical reviews were lukewarm, and audiences did not connect with the movie as strongly as with other MCU projects.
“Since it was just after the release of Endgame, it had a free rein to experiment with what could and couldn’t stick for the superhero ensemble.” — Chloé Zhao
Although Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel may return in Avengers: Doomsday, Eternals continue to lack clear direction or presence in upcoming MCU projects, reflecting mixed audience and critical reception.
