Although Alberta’s fire season officially ends on Friday, ongoing dry weather has prompted new fire advisories in the southern part of the province. Rocky View County has declared a moderate fire risk on both its east and west sides due to dry and windy conditions, as stated on the county’s website.
Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner noted that issuing advisories this late in the season is not unusual. He explained,
“This is definitely a period of season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly.”
Messner also highlighted that the dry conditions have increased grass fire incidents over the past week, sometimes with as many as three fires occurring in a single day. Some fires may be human-caused, such as from discarded lit cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don’t flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way.”
In response to the elevated fire risk, Rocky View County has also imposed a fire ban. This suspends all outstanding permits for fireworks and outdoor burns. However, exceptions exist for barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces.
Regarding the duration of the advisory, Messner indicated there is no set timeline for lifting it but expects it could last at least another week as the dry weather continues.
Summary: Rocky View County faces a moderate fire risk due to persistent dry, windy weather, leading to a fire ban and cautions against careless cigarette disposal amid rising grass fires.
