Court refuses to block Teamsters pickets at Sobeys’ Calgary stores

Court Rejects Sobeys’ Bid to Halt Teamsters' Picketing

A Calgary judge has dismissed Sobeys Capital Inc.’s request to prevent striking Teamsters from picketing its Calgary stores. These workers are based at the company’s Rocky View County distribution center and a refrigerated warehouse in the city’s southeast.

In written reasons released in November, Justice Feasby of the Court of King’s Bench declined to suspend an earlier Alberta Labour Relations Board (ALRB) ruling. That decision allows members of Teamsters Local 987 to continue their picket lines at Sobeys-owned locations in Calgary during the ongoing strike and lockout affecting 251 warehouse and delivery staff.

The ALRB’s decision from October 15, 2025 (2025 ALRB 126), determined that Calgary’s Sobeys outlets qualify as legitimate “places of work” for striking and locked-out employees.

This ruling means picketing is permitted only at company-owned stores, excluding franchised locations.

Author’s Summary

The Calgary court upheld workers’ rights to picket Sobeys-owned stores, confirming those sites as valid workplaces amid the ongoing strike.
