A retired STARS air ambulance helicopter has been permanently placed at The Hangar Flight Museum in Calgary. The aircraft, an Airbus BK117, first entered service in 1985 and was part of the founding fleet that launched the non-profit air ambulance program.
Over the years, the helicopter conducted numerous missions throughout Western Canada before being retired from operational service. According to STARS, it now serves as a tribute to the dedication and generosity of the communities that supported its life-saving work for decades.
“Now, in our 40th year, this historic aircraft stands as a symbol of the remarkable contributions made by the community, for the community,” STARS said in a Facebook post.
More than 100 donors contributed to a recent campaign that raised over $900,000 for STARS operations. Their names are now proudly displayed on the helicopter.
The Hangar Flight Museum said it was honoured to become the aircraft’s permanent home, describing it as “an inspiring legacy” that will help preserve STARS’ story for future generations.
The helicopter that once helped launch STARS now stands as a lasting memorial in Calgary, celebrating community support and four decades of life-saving service.
