Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer criticized the Liberals on Friday outside the House, alleging the government was using distractions to cover up what he called a “terrible budget” that has faced widespread criticism.
Scheer accused the Liberals of trying to secure a majority without another election by pressuring opposition members to cross the floor through behind-the-scenes deals.
When asked whether outgoing Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and other Liberals before announcing his likely resignation next spring, Scheer avoided confirmation. He stated:
“I take Matt Jeneroux at his word. I do not take unnamed Liberal sources. I do not respond to rumours.”
Shortly after Scheer’s remarks, the Conservatives joined the Liberals to defeat a Bloc Quebecois amendment to the budget motion, which demanded stronger climate action and additional support for Quebeckers.
Government House Leader Steve MacKinnon warned that all budget-related votes were confidence matters, implying that losing would have triggered another election.
Additionally, a Conservative sub-amendment calling for the removal of the industrial carbon tax and clean fuel regulations was defeated on Thursday.
