Jim Belushi reveals what it was really like to watch his brother John get into ‘Blues Brothers’ role

Jim Belushi Reflects on His Brother John's Rise in 'Blues Brothers'

Jim Belushi recently shared a cherished memory from his early Hollywood days involving his late brother, John Belushi, in one of his iconic roles. John gained fame as a standout talent in the original 1975 cast of “Saturday Night Live.” Alongside fellow cast member Dan Aykroyd, he co-created The Blues Brothers, evolving them into a renowned blues and soul music act.

The Birth and Growth of The Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers debuted as musical guests on “Saturday Night Live” in April 1978, eventually forming a full band. By September, they were opening for comedian Steve Martin during his performances at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles.

Jim’s Favorite Moment

“I’ll tell you what I loved: I loved going to the Universal Amphitheater when they came to LA and they opened for Steve Martin,” Jim, 71, recalled at the AFI Fest premiere of his film Song Sung Blue. “And John was so, so magnificent. I loved that moment, to see my brother just hit the top of his chart.”

After John's Passing

John Belushi passed away on March 5, 1982, from a suspected drug overdose, just two years after that defining moment. Following his brother’s death, Jim stepped into the role of Zee Blues, performing alongside Aykroyd’s Elwood Blues, at Aykroyd’s urging.

Summary: Jim Belushi fondly remembers watching John Belushi rise to fame as part of The Blues Brothers and later honoring his legacy by joining the band himself.
