Lindsay Sandiford, a British grandmother who was freed from death row in Bali, is reportedly flying back to the UK today after spending 13 years in prison. Along with another British national, she is being repatriated to the UK under an agreement with Indonesia.
Sandiford, aged 69, is expected to leave Bali this afternoon on a 20-hour flight with a brief layover before arriving at Heathrow Airport. Through a pastor who has supported her case, she expressed gratitude for being given a “second chance” to reunite with her family in England, after spending over a decade on death row for drug smuggling.
She is reported to be seriously ill and was recently examined by a British consulate doctor in Bali, according to Yusril Ihza Mahendra, an Indonesian senior minister for legal affairs.
Rev. Christie Buckingham, a pastor at Bayside Church in Melbourne currently in Indonesia and one of Sandiford’s advocates, shared:
“We are deeply grateful for the courageous compassion shown by President Prabowo Subianto and the Indonesian government in their commitment to repatriate Lindsay Sandiford on humanitarian grounds. After 13 years, she is keen to be back home with her family.
She will forever be grateful for this second chance.”
Lindsay Sandiford’s repatriation marks a hopeful new chapter after over a decade on death row, underscored by international compassion and humanitarian efforts.
