Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend, following a turbulent start to the storm season. Warm daytime temperatures in Sydney are expected to be followed by late thunderstorms and strong winds on both Friday and Saturday.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathon Howe reported that a developing cold front will bring several unsettled days across southeastern Australia on Friday and Saturday.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,”
He warned that damaging wind gusts could impact parts of northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales on Friday afternoon. Thunderstorms are also possible in major cities including Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,”
Mr. Howe added that those areas could experience damaging wind gusts accompanying the thunderstorms into Saturday. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail are also expected from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and interior parts of Queensland.
The east coast is facing a dangerous weekend with widespread storms, heavy rain, and high winds threatening multiple regions in southeastern Australia.
Author’s note: Australians on the east coast should stay alert this weekend as severe storms may bring hazardous weather conditions.
