On Wednesday, October 22nd, at 7 p.m., Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai appeared in an online seminar available to Ursinus students to discuss her latest memoir, Finding My Way. The event was part of the Author’s Talk Series hosted by the Library Speakers Consortium.
During an hour-long session, Yousafzai joined host and moderator Brandon Adler to answer questions about her life and book. Adler introduced the Consortium as “a partnership of more than 500 library systems across the US, Canada, and New Zealand, aimed at making author talks accessible to communities of all sizes.”
The seminar combined pre-submitted and live questions from the chat, allowing attendees to engage with Yousafzai. Discussions focused on her bestselling memoir and the challenges she faced, especially during college.
Unlike her first memoir, I Am Malala, this new book presents a deeply personal and candid account.
“This memoir is the most personal reflection I have ever shared,” Yousafzai said. “This is me reintroducing myself for who I am and the most important thing for me in all of these years has been to be true to myself. This is not to show myself as a symbol or as a hero but to show myself for who I am. This is the most personal story, and I have been very honest and open in talking about everything just to ensure that it’s the true side that people can learn more about."
The memoir highlights her authentic experiences, emphasizing honesty and openness to reveal her genuine self beyond symbolic representation.
The event offered a unique glimpse into Malala’s journey, providing valuable insights into her personal growth and the realities behind her public image.
Author's summary: Malala Yousafzai’s new memoir offers an intimate, honest look at her life, emphasizing authenticity over symbolism in sharing her personal journey.
