Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat, is seriously considering a run for the U.S. Senate in the Lone Star State. Polls indicate she would be a frontrunner in the Democratic primary.
Democrats face difficult odds in the 2026 Senate elections and are looking to conservative states like Texas to gain seats and win a majority. Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate.
The party views GOP-held seats in Maine, which supported former Vice President Kamala Harris by roughly seven points, and North Carolina, which backed President Donald Trump by about three points, as primary targets for flipping seats.
No other Republican-held Senate seats in states won by Harris or with narrow Trump victories are up for reelection next year. This reality forces Democrats to focus on competitive races in states like Texas to have a shot at controlling the chamber.
If Crockett runs, it would energize the Democratic primary, where several well-known lawmakers are already competing for the nomination. Elected to the House in 2022, Crockett has gained national attention for her vocal opposition to President Donald Trump and GOP policies.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris described Crockett as “authentic” in conversations about future party leadership.
Newsweek reached out to Crockett’s campaign and office for comment via email.
Jasmine Crockett's potential run signals a shifting dynamic in Texas politics amid Democrats' push to flip key Senate seats in 2026.
