Residents in Toronto’s Moss Park neighborhood had their electricity restored after enduring a power outage that lasted nearly 29 hours. According to Toronto Hydro, the issue began at 8:11 a.m. Wednesday and was resolved by 1 p.m. Thursday.
"Power has now been restored to all customers. We sincerely thank everyone for your patience as our crews worked through these extensive and complex repairs," Toronto Hydro stated on social media.
The outage impacted close to 600 customers in the area bordered by Queen Street East and Jarvis Street, extending to Parliament Street and Front Street East. Initially, more than 1,000 customers lost power, with restoration first estimated for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Toronto Hydro spokesperson Brie Davis noted the real number of affected residents might have been higher due to how the utility measures outages.
“In some cases, condos and buildings are fed by a single bulk meter. Because of this, our outage map reflects one meter as one customer, even though many residents may be impacted,” Davis explained.
An investigation revealed the outage stemmed from a suspected third-party dig at an active construction site, which led to infrastructure damage.
“The work that caused the dig-in is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to our infrastructure. Repairing this damage required our crews to excavate 14 feet underground to access the affected area,” Davis added.
