FBI Mobilizes Special Unit to Assist Guatemala in Manhunt

Following a dramatic prison break, Guatemala has requested support from the FBI’s Joint Task Force Vulcan to recapture 16 escaped leaders of the Barrio 18 gang. This incident has caused a significant security crisis in the region.

Escape Details and Immediate Impact

The breakout occurred at Fraijanes II prison, near Guatemala City, involving 20 top Barrio 18 members. This gang is designated a terrorist organization by both Guatemala and the United States. The exact date of the escape is unclear, though it was reported in mid-October.

So far, four escapees have been rearrested, but the majority remain at large, raising concerns about a resurgence in gang violence.

Government Response

In response, President Bernardo Arévalo swiftly removed his interior minister and appointed Marco Antonio Villeda to the position. Villeda confirmed the involvement of the FBI’s Joint Task Force Vulcan, established in 2019 to combat transnational criminal groups such as Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13).

“We are coordinating closely with our partners to bring these individuals back into custody,” said Marco Antonio Villeda.

International Cooperation

Guatemalan authorities have also sought cooperation from Mexico and Honduras, suspecting some fugitives may have crossed international borders.
