Cornea Recipient Shares Her Journey During Eye Donation Month
Christine Lichti, a pediatric critical care nurse with 25 years of experience, opened up about how corneal disease impacted her vision and transformed her life thanks to two generous donors. November marks Eye Donation Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the profound effect cornea donation has on restoring sight.
The Eye Bank Association of America is highlighting Lichti's story in its national campaign to promote cornea donation. She underwent corneal transplants in both eyes, which deeply influenced her personal life and nursing career.
Challenges from Corneal Disease
Lichti described her key struggle as intense light sensitivity that made driving dangerous, especially during early mornings and at night. Bright lights caused her pain and excessive tearing.
“My main issue was severe light sensitivity that affected my ability to drive safely, especially first thing in the morning or at night.”
Life After Transplant
Thanks to the selfless donors, she regained the ability to drive safely, enjoy sunny days outdoors, and watch fireworks—activities she previously couldn’t partake in.
“Thanks to my donors, I can now drive to work safely, enjoy a sunny day in the snow or at the lake, and even watch fireworks — all things I couldn’t do before.”
A Personal Connection to Organ Donation
As an ICU nurse, Lichti had cared for patients who donated organs and those who received them. Now, she experiences the other side as a transplant recipient.
“As an ICU nurse, I’ve taken care of patients who became organ donors, and I’ve cared for those who received transplants. Now, I’ve been on the other side, as a recipient of this incredible gift.”
