Authorities are seeking a 24-year-old Algerian man who was mistakenly freed from HMP Wandsworth. This is the second wrongful release recently recorded.
The man was serving time for trespass with intent to steal and has a prior conviction for indecent exposure.
This information emerged shortly after David Lammy, standing in for the Prime Minister during PMQs, refused to answer repeated questions from shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge about whether other migrant prisoners had been accidentally released.
Mr Lammy stated he was “absolutely outraged and appalled by the mistaken release of a foreign criminal wanted by the police,” adding that “officials have been working through the night to take him back to prison.”
The recent incident follows the release of Hadush Kebatu from HMP Chelmsford, who should have been moved to an immigration removal centre.
Such repeated administrative mistakes highlight ongoing challenges in managing prisoners who are also immigration cases.
