Scientists have urged the UK government to ban SUVs, also known as Chelsea tractors, due to their increased involvement in fatal accidents. While these large vehicles, from Land Rover Defenders to Tesla Model Ys, offer better protection for drivers, they pose a greater risk to pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.
Research led by Dr. Anthony Laverty from Imperial College London highlights that SUVs are 44% more likely to be involved in fatal collisions with adult pedestrians or cyclists. Even more alarming, this risk increases to 82% in fatal accidents involving children.
"The taller, squarer bonnets of SUVs cause more serious injuries," write the experts in the BMJ's climate issue.
The report recalls a tragic incident two years ago near a school in Wimbledon, southwest London. Eight-year-olds Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau died when an £80,000 Land Rover crashed into an end-of-term picnic at the Study Preparatory School.
Nuria Sajjad was enjoying a tea party with classmates to mark the last day of term when the crash occurred, which also claimed the life of Selena Lau.
